EY Managed Document Review (MDR) forms part of EY’s Forensic Technology and Discovery Services (FTDS) business unit. The team act on a variety of matters ranging from internal investigations, cross-border litigation and arbitration cases, and worldwide regulatory investigations. Comprising of leading professionals in the areas of Law and Technology, the team form an integral part of EY’s eDiscovery service offering.

The Managed Document Review (MDR) Manager is a specialized engagement-chargeable role that functions as an integral team member supporting the MDR team. The MDR Manager supports document review and will have direct client contact. The position performs, coordinates and manages areas of responsibility and interfaces regularly with clients and their counsel. Specific activities may vary based on the needs of the engagement. The MDR Manager is expected to maintain high annual client-chargeable utilization and productivity. The position requires knowledge and experience specific to document review and related tasks.

Essential Functions of the Job:

The MDR Manager’s essential responsibilities may include:

  • Liaising with clients, in-house counsel, external legal teams, witnesses, other experts, police, criminal prosecutors and regulatory enforcers

  • Serve as the primary point of contact and liaison between management team, QC team and first-level reviewers, ensuring that the requirements of the project are met

  • Prepare documentation needed for project support, including project specifications, review manuals and reports

  • Monitor daily activity, provide status reports, and conduct daily briefings

  • Communicate regularly with QC and management teams to track project progress

  • Perform final quality checks before the deliverable is sent to the client

  • Reviewing documents in accordance with a defined review protocol, including review for relevance, privilege, confidentiality, and issue codes

  • Performing QC/QA of first level review performed by contract attorneys

  • Performing additional review services, including tasks related to fact development, witness kit and deposition preparation, and other forms of review conducted by the MDR team

  • Performing data and review analytics and search analysis on datasets before and during first level review

  • Assisting in the development and deployment of Technology Assisted Review protocols for MDR projects

  • Assisting in the identification, vetting, onboarding and training of contract attorney reviewers

Analytical/Decision Making Responsibilities:

  • Make independent decisions; exercise sound judgment/discretion

  • Duties vary in scope and range from moderate to high complexity

Knowledge and Skills Requirements:

  • Strong organization, attention to detail, prioritization, project management and customer service skills

  • project management skills, including experience in developing management reports, processes and systems that produce predictable results on time and on budget for large complex projects

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills required for providing guidance and feedback to review and QC teams

  • Working knowledge of service line and engagement, and of the firm’s structure, key personnel and organizational policies and procedures

  • Effectively coordinate simultaneous projects and prioritize multiple tasks, including multi-location coordination

  • Meet tight deadlines, perform high quality work and apply diligence to follow up

  • Effectively summarize and conclude on work, applying appropriate documentation standards

  • Protect confidential and proprietary information

  • Master use of intermediate functions of firm standard and service-line specific software applications and databases, e.g., MS Excel, MS Powerpoint, Relativity (kCura)

Supervision Responsibilities:

  • Receives some supervision

  • Responsibility for reviewing and coordinating the work of the contract lawyer team

Other Requirements:

  • May work at client location

  • May require travel

  • Self-motivated, work independently, adept in fast-paced changing environment

  • Adhere to firm independence requirements

Qualification Requirements

  • Qualified lawyer with experience of working in an established law firm or in-house legal department,

  • Licensed to practice law and in good standing preferably within the jurisdiction in which they are working

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in managing large document review teams

  • Experience in managing quality control process for document review projects

  • Working knowledge of litigation technology, including key applications, databases and programs such as Relativity
