EY’s Financial Services Tax practice provides tax advisory and compliance services to a variety of clients in the Financial Services market.

Our Financial Services Research & Development (R&D) Tax Services team sits within our Business Tax Advisory practice and is a successful team of tax and technology / engineering specialists who work with a variety of Financial Services organisations. This is an interesting area of tax and has received significant focus but the current Government in seeking to encourage investment in Science and Technology. With significant IT expenditure in the Financial Services sector and an increasing focus on digital operations, Big Data and IT resilience this is an exciting time for the team.

The Opportunity:

This offers an exciting opportunity for motivated individuals with a background in IT and Software Engineering to join EY’s fast growing and highly successful Financial Services R&D Tax team. The team are looking for experienced and enthusiastic engineers to be part of a growing and dynamic specialist practice. This provides a unique opportunity to widen your skill set and not only work within a professional services environment and but also proactively contribute to building a business. We have opportunities at our London & Leeds offices.

Responsibilities:

Your main responsibility will be to work very closely with our client’s senior IT staff and Chief Technology Officers across a range of industry sectors within the technical disciplines. Leveraging from your technical knowledge and industry experience, you will be responsible for implementing technical aspects of projects. Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting in interviewing clients’ senior technical staff in order to develop an understanding of the technical characteristics of the projects undertaken

  • Facilitate application of HMRC and BIS guidelines to identify those R&D projects eligible for tax relief

  • Writing technical project reports describing the technological objectives, advancements and uncertainties of client projects, to support the R&D claim

  • Documenting meetings and interviews in written format

  • Working in a team environment with tax specialists to prepare R&D claims

  • Lateral thinking in relation to innovative approaches and solutions to compiling the claims based on the company’s circumstances

Further activities will include:

  • Supporting senior team members in winning new clients by leveraging from industry sector expertise through the preparation and delivery of proposals and maintaining internal databases.

  • Managing possible leads from other areas of the EY tax practice and build relationships with these referred clients

  • Developing and building an internal network within the other functions at EY

  • Assisting the project management aspect of a project by producing project budgets and timetables that are efficient and cost effective, completing internal risk management procedures and undertaking billing aspects of the work

  • Maintaining up to date technical and industry knowledge and understanding – ensuring best use of knowledge network and proactively contributing and encouraging contribution by staff

Experience Required:

  • Previous R&D tax knowledge is NOT required for this role

  • Technical industry knowledge and experience in the Financial Services IT, software or high-technology sectors

  • Relevant qualifications in the specific area of expertise required for example masters in engineering for example masters in electronic engineering or bachelor’s degree in computer science

  • Technical expertise in your discipline and understanding the commercial/technical issues faced in this sector

  • Excellent software implementation skills

Good client relationship management skills with the ability to understand client’s needs and deliver quality outputs to clients
