After the financial crisis a new landscape for managing bank failure through resolution has been developed. There also remains an overhang of non-performing loans within the European banking system. The EY Bank Restructuring team advice clients on bank crises, restructuring and loan sales. Our clients are Governments, Regulators, Banks and Investors.
The role of a Manager - Restructuring, is primarily to support the delivery of complex client assignments in the field of bank restructuring and resolution. The role will entail providing practical, actionable advice to banks and regulators on how to restructure or resolve banks and the implications of doing so.
The role requires a broad base of financial services experience ideally with some experience of having been involved in a financial or operational restructuring:
Experience of conducting strategic reviews of non-core or non-performing assets and advising clients, sell-side and buy-side, on credit opportunities, loan portfolio and structured transactions. Portfolios could include unsecured consumer loans, residuals balances from secured lending, SME and Corporate loans.
Understand the key business drivers of a bank, enabling co-development of restructuring approaches;
Manage, under the supervision of Director / Partners, restructuring engagements (or work streams within engagements) by assisting with scope definition and execution;
Prepare and review deliverables in various forms, including financial models, written reports, presentations and discussions with clients;
Demonstrate a keen understanding of bank restructuring through practical experience as well as though support of publications and marketing efforts;
Establish and maintain client relationships: Establish credibility and presence with senior executives and engage with them as a peer to debate operational and practical issues;
Work closely with and understand the capabilities of EY and specifically Transaction Advisory Services and look for opportunities to sell additional services to our clients.
In wider team, plays a role in other team initiatives – for example, account management, learning and development, coaching and recruitment.
The candidate must have:
A background in loan sales, valuation or bank restructuring is ideal as this role is heavily centred around these disciplines.
Solid commercial acumen, knowledge of the European banking sector, understanding of trends facing the industry and the market responses to those trends, particularly at the stressed / distressed end of the market
The ability to analyses the impact of transactions; a proficiency in M&A analysis, financial statements, key accounting and finance concepts and of value drivers
A clear understanding of banking concepts that impact the position of a bank such as MREL, TLAC, BASEL III, Securitisations,
A good grasp of a bank’s operations and have experience of advising of operating model change
Experience in presenting findings clearly in reports and other deliverables to senior clients
Advanced Excel Modelling capability
Credibility and presence with board level executives and can engage with them as a peer to debate operational and strategic issues
An ACA or similar qualification
While the role is London based much of the client activity of FSR is in continental Europe and beyond, as such any candidate must be willing and able to travel extensively
The following experience or capability would be advantageous:
Experience of working in Big 4 environment
A track record in a financial and operational restructuring and creating, evaluating, and reviewing new business plans and initiatives and an ability to model their impacts
Experience of having supported new business development through identification through to closing
A good grasp of bank valuation approaches and an ability to apply them
Experience of modelling non-performing loan books
Fluency in one or more European languages
