Position Summary:

This position is responsible for regional office leadership supporting the Fiduciary/Trust Tax Services practice with the preparation and delivery of tax information statements, tax returns and related reporting for agency, custody and fiduciary accounts for tax compliance engagements with banks, wealth management firms, trust companies and law firms.

Successful performance in this position is dependent upon:

  • Leading a team of fiduciary tax professionals to provide for timely, efficient and accurate production of high volumes of tax information statements and tax returns

  • Managing and growing a book of business consisting of multiple clients located across the United States who require trust tax outsourcing services of varying levels of scope and complexity;

  • Serving as a trusted advisor and role model for our people across multiple teams

  • Performing tax research and preparing written tax advice;

  • Preparing complex 1099 tax information statements and tax returns including Forms 1041 and state income tax returns for trusts and estates, and identifying generation skipping transfer tax events that may require further consultation to determine and fulfill additional reporting requirements; and preparation of foundation returns for trusts and;

  • Handling postmortem planning, including selection of income tax year, IRC Section 645 election, generation-skipping transfer tax elections, income/estate tax deduction planning, choice of valuation date and IRC Section 303 redemptions;

  • Reviewing complex 1099 tax information statements and tax returns prepared by lesser experienced team members; and

  • Serving as a subject matter professional providing guidance and advice informed by professional experience and tax technical acumen.

Essential Functions of the Job:

  • Retaining and expanding relationships with our clients, understanding their unique needs to provide tailored service

  • Leading contract renewals and new business pursuits

  • Identifying and pursuing opportunities to introduce additional EY services to support clients with meeting business needs and achieving strategic objectives, and in doing so coordinating resources across EY service lines

  • Signing tax returns as preparer

  • Leading teams through subordinate managers in the following functions:

  • Managing risks and capitalizing on opportunities to improve our services

  • Translating complex data from a range of sources into client-ready insights and deliverables

  • Communicating complex tax issues to colleagues, clients and non-tax professionals

  • Contributing to development of tax alerts about emerging matters related to the trust tax field

  • Preparing, reviewing and overseeing production of 1099 tax information statements and tax returns

  • Researching tax law issues, providing advice and assistance

  • Reviewing and interpreting wills and trust documents

  • Analyzing and resolving complex problems to support accuracy in tax reporting

  • Recommending proper tax treatment of various transactions, including corporate mergers and special distributions

  • Review and confirm accuracy in tax reporting pertaining to:

  • Oil and gas royalties and working interests

  • Passive and non-passive business income

  • Annuity and IRA income

  • Rental assets including real estate, aircraft and watercraft, and installment sales

  • Foreign information filings including Forms 8865, 5471, 8621 and 926

  • Foreign tax credit calculations on Form 1116

  • Reportable transactions reported on Form 8886 Withholding for foreign beneficiaries

  • State nexus for trusts

  • Trust accounting income

  • Review of deductions and trust expenses

  • Tax Elections

  • Cost basis analysis for unique assets


  • Developing and/or reviewing and delivering training to support the professional development of our people

  • Participating in internal and external training to maintain and enhance knowledge of tax laws and software applications

  • Directing workflow to comply with clients’ needs and expectations and complete special projects

  • Communicating regularly with colleagues and practice leadership

  • Overseeing communications with client liaisons and client trust administration teams

  • Managing people and resources to support efficiency and drive profitable growth

  • Directing timely and accurate billing and collections for tax compliance and related services

  • Leading contract renewals and new business pursuits.

  • Analytical/Decision Making Responsibilities:

  • Managing executive level relationships with clients for the purpose of reviewing engagement deliverables, assessing service quality, identifying the potential need for additional trust tax compliance services or other EY service offerings

  • Solid understanding of the client’s business, wealth platform, and infrastructure to support management of the relationship and enhanced tax services delivery

  • Understanding the effects of tax law changes on the tax compliance services delivered to our clients and implementing such changes to provide for accuracy and consistency in the preparation of tax information statements, tax returns and related reports

  • Educating clients on tax law changes and the effect of such changes on tax service deliverables

  • Oversee the onboarding of new clients, assignment of the engagement team, client introductions and communication, development of a tax services operating plan, ONESOURCE™ Trust Tax set-up, coordinating timing of bridged data, assessment of the client’s trust accounting system for accuracy of bridged data, and analysis of prior tax data for incorporation into current year tax information for successful production of tax deliverables

  • Assist clients with trust accounting system conversions, supporting effective coordination with ONESOURCE™ Trust Tax to provide for continued integrity and accuracy of client bridged data

  • Integrate new services into existing tax engagements for seamless delivery of managed tax services

  • Identifying team members to work on special projects with practice-wide impact to support enhanced quality and service delivery

  • Identifying and resolving issues that may have impacts on tax service deliverables across the FTTS practice

  • Working across FTTS offices and with practice leadership to identify and capitalize on best practices supporting tax quality and efficiency

  • Identifying and deploying resources as needed to fill gaps in service delivery in a high-volume, fast paced working environment

  • Assisting engagement teams on more complex client engagement matters that may require consultation and review by subject matter professionals and/or practice leadership

  • Identifying service enhancements that will improve tax deliverables and engagement economics via improved accuracy of bridged data, educating engagement team members to provide for increased knowledge of clients’ trust accounting systems to provide for more insightful client communication and guidance, ensuring the team is using the ONESOURCE™ Trust Tax software to its full functional capabilities, implementing best practices, enhancing team members communication skills for continued growth and improved service delivery, helping team members to identify gaps that need analysis and review and ensuring team members understand the difference between routine and non-routine service deliverables that maybe out-of-scope in nature

  • Working closely with internal engagement team members on managing client relationships and tax deliverables to support professional growth and development including improved confidence in client communication, especially in more client sensitive service matters, supporting contract renewals, providing coaching on capturing out-of-scope revenue, and identifying potential add-on services, as well as introduction of team members to EY cross-service line professionals to help build a strong internal network and identify future service opportunities

Knowledge and Skills Requirements:

  • Proficient in computer software applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint

  • Proficient with company-specific systems and tax software applications, including ONESOURCE™ Trust Tax

  • Thorough knowledge of fiduciary and/or income tax law and concepts required to prepare US federal and state tax information statements and tax returns

  • Maintain and enhance knowledge of tax compliance and information reporting rules

  • Read and interpret trust agreements

  • Work effectively both independently and with a team

  • Proficient in the English language, including the ability to listen, understand, read and communicate effectively both in writing and verbally in a professional environment

  • Strong knowledge of and interest in taxation, trusts and estates, wealth planning and fiduciary income taxation

  • Excellent client interaction skills

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Strong technical expertise in fiduciary accounting matters

Supervision Responsibilities:

  • Direct management of Associate Analysts, Analysts, Senior Analysts, Assistant Managers and Services Managers

  • Interaction with practice leadership with significant autonomy in performing essential functions of the job

  • Instruct, coach and develop a team of tax professionals, review work and help confirm team members have the knowledge, tools and opportunities they need to excel

  • Build effective long-term relationships and manage workflow effectively with our clients, understanding their unique needs to provide tailored services

  • Serve as the executive responsible for managing client relationships and problem-solving, coordinating efforts within the Fiduciary/Trust Tax Services practice and across other tax service lines to timely, accurately and efficiently deliver services that meet client needs and expectations

  • Contribute to professional development, manage and motivate teams, capitalizing on diverse skills and experiences to support employee engagement and deliver exceptional client service

  • Oversee coordination of service delivery with the Center for Trust Tax Compliance and/or other regional engagement teams to insure timely service delivery and consistent quality in work products

  • Deliver quality services to internal and external clients by monitoring and reporting on progress towards meeting specified needs and objectives, and reviewing and confirming accuracy and completeness of work products

  • Demonstrate technical capabilities and the ability to problem-solve through tax technical research and consultation with practice leadership and subject matter professionals

  • Manage internal and external client relationships and professional network to support client retention and new business development

Other Requirements:

  • Travel required (15%-20%)

Job Requirements:


  • Undergraduate or Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Tax, Law, or Economics


  • Minimum of 7 years of work experience in professional services or professional tax organization

  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive, post-baccalaureate experience working on a range of basic to complex tax information statements, tax returns and/or reports; or alternatively a Master’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, Tax, Law, or Economics and a minimum of 4 years of experience working on a range of basic to complex tax information statements, tax returns and/or reports

  • Must have 5-7 years of experience with fiduciary tax law concepts and with preparing U.S. federal and state fiduciary tax returns

  • Must have 5-7 years of experience communicating with client liaisons and/or trust administration teams on tax matters

Certification Requirements:

  • CPA or EA certification or membership in The Bar
