As a Tax Manager, you’ll see this first hand by being immersed in the evolving tax environment through technical developments in Illinois income and franchise tax laws, consulting with client teams on the preparation of Illinois income tax filings, advising teams on planning opportunities and refund reviews, and coaching and developing staff on your engagement teams.
As a member of the Illinois Income Tax State Desk team, you will be a key member of EY's State Tax Desk Network, a group of senior EY staff and partners with a state-specific focus. Via the Desk Network, we help businesses improve tax performance, better manage controversy, and resolve tax disputes, wherever they do business. We believe that by managing our clients' state tax obligations responsibly and proactively, we can make a critical difference. You will also be a member of the Central Region Controversy team where you will assist with state tax controversy projects throughout the Midwest.
Your key responsibilities
As a member of the Illinois Income Tax Desk team, you will provide clients and internal teams technical Illinois income tax advice in a variety of contexts, including tax provisions, income and franchise tax return positions, income tax audits, refund reviews, restructuring projects, nexus determinations and penalty abatement requests, to name only a few. The Income/Franchise Tax Manager must be comfortable identifying and articulating risks inherent in any advice and must be consistently mindful of future controversy. And speaking of controversy, we will also look to you to be a key asset to our Central Region Controversy team where you’ll research and draft administrative appeals, argue tax appeals before administrative bodies, assist clients in defending audits, and manage voluntary disclosure processes for clients throughout the Central Region. We’ll also look to you to develop creative tax controversy solutions that can be leveraged nationally.

Successful oral and written advocate
Provide practical Illinois income tax advice and recommendations tailored to each client’s unique needs
Communicate complex tax issues to non-tax professionals and clients
Identify and react to risks and opportunities to improve our services and processes
Stay current on Illinois statutory, regulatory, and case law developments
Keep up to date with ongoing trends in the state tax landscape
Build effective long-term relationships with our clients, revenue department staff, and colleagues at all levels
Develop the technical and soft skills of more junior colleagues, and participate in the performance management process
To qualify for the role you must have
A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a graduate degree in Tax or Law and approximately five to seven years of related work experience
CPA certification or licensed attorney status
A thorough background in state income tax consulting and controversy, including strong familiarity with Illinois income and franchise tax laws
Strong collaboration and negotiation skills, and the confidence to engage with internal and external clients directly
Excellent communication skills
The ability to prioritize when working on multiple projects,

Experience managing projects and budgets
Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
The ability to adapt your work style to work with both internal and client team members
