The opportunity

An opportunity has arisen to join the UK Regulatory & Public Policy team. The team are responsible for the firm's relationships with its regulators and professional bodies, as well as leading on many areas of emerging regulatory and policy debates, such as long-term value, corporate reporting, culture and the future of audit.

Our team reports directly into the EY UK LLP Board, with the function and principal objective of managing regulatory risk for the UK firm and working proactively and collaboratively with policymakers, regulators, and professional bodies to not only better understand their points-of-view and but to also collaborate on key initiatives affecting our profession.

Your key responsibilities

Reporting into the Director of Regulatory & Public Policy, you’ll ensure EY is actively monitoring and reporting on key regulatory changes and/or developments that affect the firm or its clients generally.

  • You’ll lead on specific projects/issues – either managing a project/issue or representing the team as part of a wider EY working group. These could range from tracking regulatory or public policy developments, through to coordinating and/or drafting responses to key consultations impacting EY, to assisting the firm’s responses to inquiries or issues of public and professional interest.

  • You’ll manage a portfolio of key external EY stakeholders - developing and maintaining good relationships with key stakeholders and providing detailed reporting - as part of our account management and stakeholder engagement plans.

  • You’ll support the delivery of our Regulatory & Public Policy points-of-view focused on keeping our market-facing teams abreast and armed with the necessary messages and collateral to service their clients. This role is also responsible for supporting the UK Assurance leadership team’s delivery of its strategy. In particular, you will develop and communicate (internally and externally) the firm’s views on emerging and recurring issues of public and professional interest, including through the publication of board-level papers, podcasts and other communications.

  • You will co-manage the development of EY’s annual Transparency Report – our key annual publication - liaising with internal stakeholders to gather and shape relevant content whilst focussing on compliance with the Audit Firm Governance Code and other reporting requirements.

  • You will act as an ambassador, embodying the EY culture and reputation.

Skills and attributes for success

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to:

  • Distil complex issues into succinct messages.

  • Draft briefings, consultation responses and reports, identifying the relevance and impact of regulatory developments.

  • Present confidently to all levels of partners and staff, including senior members of the firm and key external stakeholders.

  • Flex one’s personal style according to the audience.

  • Resilient and enthusiastic self-starter with a proven ability to plan, prioritise and produce deliverables to a consistently high standard under own initiative.

  • A collaborative and flexible approach, and the ability to think creatively about new regulatory approaches.

To qualify for the role you must have

  • Proven analytical expertise at both a qualitative and quantitative level, with the ability to assess and analyse complex policy issues, making sound judgements/decisions with confidence, with the flexibility to change priorities when required. Note that a significant part of this role involves analysing technical documents, with the ability to grasp the main issues, develop appropriate points of view and arguments and perform numerical analysis. The ideal candidate will already be engaged in a technical role requiring analysis and subject matter expertise.

  • Relevant experience gained in an audit firm, an audit or corporate governance regulator, a business-focussed public policy role, public affairs agency, a FTSE350 company or an institutional investor.

  • Proven influencing and networking skills at a senior level in the FTSE 350, corporate governance or investor communities

  • Strong IT skills.

Ideally, you’ll also have

  • An enthusiastic, can-do approach and be a strong team player.

  • A desire to embrace and drive change, whilst identifying and supporting process improvements and demonstrating best practice.

  • Project management skills and proficiency at driving projects to a close.
