The Independence Team is responsible for ensuring EY UK and Ireland are in compliance with the auditor independence rules and regulations imposed by external regulatory bodies (eg FRC, SEC, IESBA, EU) and by EY in relation to the conduct of the firm’s auditing business. This also includes ensuring that new audit clients and engagements accepted by the firm do not result in an independence conflict. The Independence Team (led by the Independence Partner for UK and Ireland) forms part of the UK&I Risk Management Group (“RM”) which reports directly to senior management. There are currently over 20 members in the Independence Team (including conflicts) and a combined total of around 50 individuals within RM.

The opportunity

The Independence Team currently has a permanent vacancy for an Independence Manger, based in London (More London Place). This is a unique and fantastic opportunity to join a wonderful team, very much central to the firm.

Your key responsibilities

You will primarily assist client facing professionals with Independence queries. This can range in nature and may involve non audit service queries, personal Independence matters, supporting audit tenders or advising the business in respect of business relationships. Over time, given training and support, you will be expected to develop into a subject matter expert.

As an Independence Manager, you will also be expected to assist with or manage various Independence projects and processes. Examples of such matters are:

  • Supporting the business with Independence due diligence in respect of potential acquisition targets

  • Assisting in the resolution of potential Independence breaches and managing the firms breach register

  • Supporting Independence Partners/Directors on Independence related initiatives/campaigns

  • Playing a lead role in respect of compliance reviews – both regulatory inspections and internal audits

  • Answering queries from the business in respect of matters relating to Gifts and Hospitality with audit clients. Also playing an active role in the analysis of and reporting of such matters to senior stakeholders

  • Supporting Independence Directors with the preparation of Compliance / Board reports pertaining to matters of Independence

  • Undertaking compliance reviews of recent non audit services to confirm such matters were in compliance with respective Policy

  • Supporting with the role out of the firm’s online annual Independence training

As a Manager within the team, you will also be required to train, mentor and support junior members of the Independence team.

Skills and attributes for success

  • The ability to communicate with colleagues at all levels including delivering tough messages to senior leaders within the firm

  • Capable of working using own initiative, with excellent communication and organisational skills

  • Good analytical and interpretation skills

  • Adaptable and flexible with good team working skills and the ability to multi-task.

To qualify for the role you will ideally have

  • Previous experience working at a Manager level

  • Previous experience working in a Risk/Compliance function

  • Commercial awareness of the issues facing the business and the ability to deal with problems in a practical and common sense way

  • Strong project management skills and ability to prioritise key areas of responsibility, tasks and projects.

Ideally, you’ll also have the ability to

  • Build strong working relationships with people in each of our service lines, including Tax, Audit, Transactions and Advisory, and develop an excellent understanding of their business

  • Work to pre-determined deadlines and meet objectives under pressure

  • Think strategically and handle complex concepts
