Tax Litigation Manager – London

Tax

Requisition # LON00EH7

Post Date 3 days ago

Opportunity to join a fast growing direct tax litigation team within a market-leading Tax Disputes and Risk Management advisory team at a Big 4 firm. The team has enjoyed substantial growth over the last 8 years and direct tax litigation is a key investment priority for the wider Tax Practice.

The litigation team works across all sectors and with a broad range of FTSE 100, 250 and Inbound businesses as well as UHNWI clients and is seeing particular demand in the market to provide support and advice to clients, as a consequence of the ever increasing number of HMRC investigations which are not able to be resolved by agreement with HMRC.

The team currently has a number of substantial, high-profile on-going litigation engagements, with a strong pipeline of potential future opportunities. Recent litigation projects include a successful appeal to the Court of Justice of the European Union, as well as a number of First Tier and Upper Tribunal appeals and High Court cases.

The team is regularly instructed in connection with invoking the First-tier Tribunal’s powers to order HMRC to close enquiries, resisting extensive and unnecessary information notices, appealing to the First-tier Tribunal (and beyond) against HMRC’s conclusions (e.g. discovery assessment or substantive technical issues) and invoking the Administrative Court’s power to challenge, where appropriate, potentially unlawful HMRC decisions.

There is therefore a need for an Assistant Manager / Manager to join the growing team to help deliver existing engagements and support in wider business development activities.

Substantial scope for career progression, as well as the potential to gain experience working across a range of high-profile litigation engagements and other tax controversy areas for which the team is responsible, including HMRC enquiries and tax risk management work.

  • Working directly with the Head of Tax Litigation and as part of a wider tax litigation team, which usually includes colleagues from other parts of the EY tax practice

  • Scope for working across other (non-litigious) tax controversy areas, including HMRC enquiry work and providing tax risk management advice

  • Assisting with key business development and other internal / external marketing activities to identify new potential work streams / cases

Skills and attributes for success

  • Able to work as part of a wider team, as well as autonomously where necessary

  • Client focused and commercially aware

  • Technically excellent lawyer with ability to build effective relationships at all levels
