The role of Sector Investment Manager involves account managing a portfolio of large, multi-sited foreign owned companies with a base in the UK, with the aim of generating Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) projects.
The post holder will work as part of the Department for International Trade’s Investment Services Team (IST), within the Sector Advisory Service.
The Sector Advisory Service is one of IST’s 4 directorates. It comprises 5 broad sector teams and includes Investment Project Advisers who are responsible for both generating and securing FDI from companies looking to set up in the UK for the first time, and Sector Investment Managers who are responsible for sourcing FDI projects from a portfolio of existing foreign investors.
This account management role will involve working within the Advanced Engineering & Manufacturing sector team, account managing companies predominantly operating in Engineering and Chemicals industries, but will include some Food & Drink and Automotive companies too.
Your key responsibilities
Develop and account manage a caseload of foreign owned, multi-sited UK-based companies and develop in-depth influencing relationships with key company staff.
Contact and visit companies regularly in line with the account management programme principles.
Develop an awareness of your companies’ strategies, their position in market and supply chain, in order to source FDI projects and deliver added value to your clients.
Identify and develop potential FDI projects from your companies and land these by providing the required FDI investment evidence.
Generate and maintain company account plans, highlighting key personnel and future investment opportunities.
Keep accurate FDI project records using the Data Hub CRM tool and provide a monthly report with up-to-date information on your activity, FDI pipeline and progress against targets.
Contribute to team activities, sharing knowledge and skills to benefit your sector colleagues and the wider IST.
Knowledge acquisition to support investment
Create and maintain a sector focused network at a national and local level, in order to meet the needs of the FDI client.
Develop strong relationships within IST and with the DIT HQ Sector Teams, Sector Specialists and overseas Post network to support FDI projects.
Develop and maintain up-to-date industry knowledge to spot investment opportunities and remain credible in client meetings.
Key targets include:
- Achieve at least 15 successes of which 25% should be in the top three investment value bands.

A comprehensive knowledge and network within the Advanced Engineering & Manufacturing sector, particularly within Engineering and Chemicals and the ability to work across varied sector teams
Ability to identify new prospective customers, to win appointments to see them and to develop relationships
Confidence and credibility when dealing with multinational companies
Excellent team player with flexible and adaptable approach to work
Ability to create networks with local and national partners and look for extension opportunities to existing projects and relationships with clients
Strong communication skills by actively questioning and listening in order to achieve a common understanding of complex issue, using appropriate tactics and techniques to send clear and convincing messages

Proven planning and organisation skills with ability to work to tight deadlines

To qualify for the role you must have
Degree or equivalent level qualification highly desirable and evidence of past experience in delivery of FDI case work. Used to working to targets and a business plan.
Have experience in account management or a related field.
Experience and/ or good knowledge in at least one of the sub sectors where they will to be deployed and credibility with clients/industry and DIT Overseas Posts.
